The sensitization sessions aimed at creating an in-depth-understanding of index based Livestock Insurance (IBL) scheme. This product is specifically designed for pastoralists. Satellite imagery is used to asses forage availability and detect drought related forage scarcity.

During the session’s pastoralist were taken through importance of having livestock insurance as means of protecting their asset from extreme drought. Many farmers were receptive and will be registered, in the October-November window, into the scheme by Takaful livestock insurance. Climatic change have resulted to long drought seasons which normally leaves the farmer in devastated state through high animal mortality rate, to curb the situation, IBL scheme is meant to detect the drought situation and compensate farmers early to allow them procure animal feeds to protect their livestock from harsh drought season.

Speaking during the session Mr. John Lengeele, Oldonyiro livestock keeper, reported having benefited from first session conducted in 2021 where he insured his 10 cattle and 20 goats which when the drought hit he was compensated handsomely and was able to secure feeds for his animals during that period, “it saved my livestock, when others had nowhere to run, my kinsmen lets impress this and take insurance” he said as final remarks.
