Enumerators play a vital role in engaging with farmers and explaining the benefits of the digital registration system, highlighting how it would enhance transparency, traceability, and market access for Kenyan coffee.
The ARABIKA project; Action to Relaunch Agriculture and Branding Internationalization of Kenyan Coffee, in and out of Africa (ARABIKA), a collaborative effort between Kenya and Italy, has made significant progress in rejuvenating the Kenyan coffee sector by, among other ways, implementing a digital registration and traceability system. Enumerators have been trained on the platform’s features, functionalities, and best practices to onboard farmers. The training sessions provide in-depth knowledge on accurate data collection and traceability within the coffee supply chain. Enumerators are trained on how to navigate the digital platform, input data accurately, and address technical challenges.
Following the training, enumerators embark on fieldwork activities, visiting coffee-growing regions within the project scope. They use the skills acquired during the training to guide farmers through the registration process, ensuring accurate and comprehensive data is captured for each farmer. Enumerators play a vital role in engaging with farmers and explaining the benefits of the digital registration system, highlighting how it would enhance transparency, traceability, and market access for Kenyan coffee. They collect key information such as farmers’ personal details, farm size, coffee varieties grown, and production volumes, and provide assistance and support to farmers throughout the registration process.
The ARABIKA project closely monitors the activities of enumerators to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and adherence to project guidelines. Regular check-ins, supervision, and feedback mechanisms are established to support enumerators in their roles, identifying areas for improvement, addressing challenges, and ensuring the quality and reliability of the collected data.
The project continues to make strides towards enhancing transparency, traceability, and market access for Kenyan coffee, with enumerators playing a crucial role in achieving these objectives.
