Project/GENERAL overview

E4Impact Foundation is one of the implementing partners in the ARABIKA project. ARABIKA stands for Action to Re-Launch Agriculture and Branding Internationalization of Kenyan Coffee in and out of Africa and the project focuses on the coffee supply chain by acting on the quality improvement component, capacity building of farmer cooperatives and branding / marketing of their coffee produce. We are looking to contract a Local technical consultant for data analysis Specialist who will be responsible for implementing the following tasks:

Main Tasks

  • Collection and analysis of existing agro-ecological data on the cultivation areas in the beneficiary counties covered in the ARABIKA project and advising and identifying the simplest and most easily understood ways to display and report the data.
  • Advising and identifying what baseline data to collect to help assess progress, which can be attributed to the ARABIKA project interventions.
  • Analysis of the agro-ecological data in the single coffee areas with the aim of profiling coffee labels according to the characteristics of the cultivation areas (i.e. altitude above sea level, methods of cultivation and harvesting, physical and organoleptic characteristics, etc.), i.e. providing geographic analysis support to the analysis of associations between altitude, atmospheric weather patterns and coffee output, cup quality/characteristics.
    • Specific Deliverable: Analytic document from analysis including map compositions and calculations.
  • Analysis of collected data relating to the meteorological conditions of each single geographical area.
  • Analysis of case-reporting in the context of altitude, rainfall and temperature data, with the aim of identifying the seasonal variations of weather and its influence on coffee output, cup quality/unique cup characteristics.
  • Specific Deliverable: Build a spatial database of available information on indicators of relevance of weather pattern, altitude and atmospheric conditions (e.g., per county output/coffee cup quality/characteristics in standard projection and with relevant The database should be readable in open-source GIS packages. The preferred scale of data will by county;
  • If needed, flexibility to conduct short-term field trips to coffee producing COOPs/counties (Bungoma, Kiambu, Embu, Nyeri, Meru, Machakos and Murang’a) to meet with key stakeholders to ensure that the data used and analysis is aligned to coffee production, and the said data in a format that can be easily read by either human or machine; and share/secure buy-in of the data analysis.
    • Deliverable: An analytic report of statistical relationships between climate variability and change and its impact on coffee production, output, cup quality/unique characteristics etc. The report will outline the analysis methodology in detail and will analyze the historical relationship between climate variability and coffee production, current production patterns and which will then explore the potential changing nature of future projections.
  • Conduct an analysis of merged observed climate datasets to compare the differences between the historical long term and the recent climatology of the counties. This analysis will focus on general climate parameters (monthly means/totals, wet/dry spell durations and frequencies, heat spell durations and frequencies, and heavy rain days etc.
    • Deliverable: Summary (including data) outlining climatological statistics for periods suggested for each county, using:
      • Climate datasets, to define influence on coffee production, cup quality, unique characteristics etc. And conduct an analysis of the available climate projections to extrapolate future coffee production output. This analysis should identify where possible, changes in production.
  • Assisting the ARABIKA team in improving and streamlining processes regarding data flow and data quality to improve data accuracy, viability, and value.
  • Designing implementing and maintaining data collection systems, databases, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality; this includes fixing coding errors and other data-related problems.
  • Submission of data and reports; and engage with external stakeholders to communicate progress and ensure buy-in to analysis and findings.
  • Synthesize deliverables to effectively communicate findings through a variety of products (e.g., analytical report, technical summary, infographics) accessible to a variety of audiences, such as government officials, ARABIKA implementing partners, other donors, and researchers.
  • Preparing reports for executive leadership that effectively communicate trends, patterns, and predictions using relevant data and identify opportunities for process improvements, recommend system modifications, and develop policies for data governance.
  • Designing model for data verification/validation with multiple sources.
  • Any other activity requested by the Project Coordinator regarding the project.

Qualifications and Professional experience required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in climate science – altitude and atmospheric sciences or advanced degree in Geographic Analysis with demonstrated experience in altitude and atmospheric science.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in conducting research work and including designing, developing, and testing quantitative and qualitative data collection tools; Coordinating research activities with multiple personnel, timelines, and stakeholders would be an added advantage.
  • Experience conducting technical system analysis of findings and trends using statistical analysis in research and documentation.
  • Track record of successful completion of similar assignments.
  • Competent and dedicated person / organization that can be reached for feedback.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relationships.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work within the required deadline.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
